Chair Murray Statement on Disaster Relief Package and Continuing Resolution

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement on the continuing resolution (CR) and disaster relief package just released.

“With so many communities across the country still reeling from devastating disasters, this package will deliver much-needed, overdue relief—to help people get back on their feet and help communities rebuild. I have been pushing for a comprehensive bill that addresses the wide scope of disaster relief needs across the country, and while this is not the legislation I would have written on my own, it is a strong, bipartisan package that provides the resources communities urgently need to recover.

“This package will help communities rebuild schools, roads, and utilities, help families get back on their feet, and help small businesses and farmers stay afloat—and I am especially glad it includes more funding to help families all across the country find and afford child care, including those living in areas struck by disaster.

“I will be working closely with my colleagues to get this bill signed into law in the coming days to avert a senseless shutdown and deliver this critical relief, and I will continue fighting to protect investments that working families count on as we negotiate full-year spending bills in the new year.”

Senator Murray has been pushing to approve additional disaster relief funding for well over a year. In November, she chaired a full committee hearing on the president’s updated disaster relief request, at which she underscored the need to finally pass a robust disaster relief package, noting it has been one of the longest stretches in her memory that Congress has failed to provide such relief.
