Harkin Announces Hearing to Examine Economic Impact of Alzheimer's in America

HARKIN ANNOUNCES HEARING TO EXAMINE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF ALZHEIMER’S IN AMERICA
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS subcommittee), announced that the subcommittee will meet to examine the economic impact of Alzheimer’s disease in America, as well as the current state of biomedical research into prevention and treatment of the disease. The subcommittee will meet in open session at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, in Room SD-106, Senate Dirksen Office Building.
According to the Alzheimer's Association latest facts and figures on the disease, in 2013, Alzheimer's will have cost the nation $203 billion. This number is expected to rise to $1.2 trillion by 2050. More than five million Americans are living with the disease. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
